ED Mahon – Guest DJ (15.03.19)
A friend of the show and fellow house head, Ed Mahon was a guest DJ for us on Friday 15th March 2019. We loved his set, dropping quality grooves like Dr. Packer’s remix of Andy Buchan’s ‘Spectral’ and a hot new DJ Sneak Track ‘Back and Forth’ on Hot Creations, both of which have left us wanting to listen again. For those of you wanting to know a little more about Ed, here’s his Good2Groove bio.
Where it all began
Hailing from Blackpool in the north of England, Ed started clubbing in the 90s which led to his love of house music. Some of his first clubbing experiences (from 1991-93) involved going to one of his, then, favourite clubs ‘Danza’. The buzzing atmosphere the club served up, as well as guest sets by some of biggest acts of the time, kept Ed going back for more. This, along with sharing the experience with his friends, contributed to him (and the group) finding his (their) sound in house music. This new found passion and everything that came with the house lifestyle ignited a spark in Ed, which manifested into his first dip into the DJing world.
Where to hear him
Not to be tied down to any particular style or genre, Ed’s open minded approach has seen him DJ a variety of sets over the years. From Chilled sunsets and Balearic beats to hip-hop and funk, soul and indie; Ed can do it all! He currently loves playing a low tempo, chugging acid house style in his Cowbell Radio guise, but, also plays Disco and House. He plays all this and more on @Boogie Bunker Radio, where he has a monthly show.
It’s not only Ed and his friends who were inspired by house’s first coming, it seems his brother is too; between them they have a record collection of over 3000 tracks! With an abundant and eclectic back catalogue, it’s clear that Ed takes inspiration from everywhere. But, he is most inspired by Crazy P; who he’s been a massive fan of since they started. He cites their unique talent and states that it’s “incredible to still be so relevant after 20 years in the business!” Something we can also testify to, too.
Ed’s favourite labels include Z, Midnight Riot, Futureboogie and Paper, which are some of the cornerstones of the business we all love.
And, when we asked Ed to tell us the best venue he’s DJ’d at, it was difficult to pin him down to a favourite. It came to a tie between ‘The Garden’ in Tisno and ‘Freddie’s Bar at Pikes’, Ibiza; the former for pure scenery and coolness, where he was literally DJing with one foot in the Adriatic Sea, and the latter for history and sentiment (given the sad passing of Tony Pike).
(Not so) Hidden talents
Ed’s a great Dj. We can testify to that, after sharing the decks with him at Le Club bar in Tenerife earlier this year. However, his talents do not end there - he is also a skilled producer. His first track came out in 2016 and was a remake of the old house classic ‘A Brighter Day’. He’s most proud of his remix of Go Satta’s ‘A Real Boy’, which came out last year; it's a complete remake and a different style to his other releases. It’s a chilled sunset track and has been dropped by many people in idyllic settings, making Ed a proud producer! In early March 2019 he returned with his latest track, a remake of an old house classic from Baby June, which received airplay from the likes of Graeme Park. It’s available for free here.
Where to find him
He also has two remixes coming out very soon: One for Go Satta on Emerald & Doreen and one for the Longchamps on Tici Taci. To keep up to date with Ed's music head over to his website: https://www.edmahonmusic.com.
Due to being so busy, both producing killer tacks and running his site http://www.cowbellradio.co.uk, Ed is quite happy with his residency at Alfresco Festival www.alfrescofestival.co.uk and its associated events and warm-ups. If you’ve never been, check it out, it’s a great event with a fantastic atmosphere!
Ed’s a cracking guy and has been good fun to gig with and also do this blog post with. We would like to thank him for his time and we invite you to catch the guest mix he did for sneaky disco here:
