Barry & Gibbs Spotlight

In the last 12 months you would be hard pressed to find another newcomer on the disco/edits scene who had made a bigger impression than Barry & Gibbs. Each track they have released has rocketed up the respective Traxsource, Beatport and Juno charts with a few peaking at number 1! We were lucky enough to catch up with the guys after they had done their Guest mix for the Sneaky Disco show EP113.

A History

Based in Lille, northern France, Barry & Gibbs are Quentin aka Barry (Also known as Mark Lower) and Fred (Gibbs). The dynamic duo formed in 2016 and describe their style as mainly Disco/NuDisco with a touch of funk! Barry (24) has been DJ'ing since he was 12, and has been producing almost the same time period, whilst Gibbs (37) has been DJ’ing for almost 20 years. Both confess to a love of vinyl and keep topping up their collection with new and old pressings.

What inspires you?

Inspired by artists such as Dimitri from Paris, Joey Negro and the Reflex, the duo certainly have a huge love for Disco. When asked about which DJs they follow at the moment, in addition to their inspirations, they stated “Dr Packer, whilst Gibbs gives a shout out to his bro, Mark Lower ;-)”, but they were both quick to point out that there are way too many DJs to choose favourites from. When asked which are their favourite labels - the heavyweights Razor’n’Tape, Glitterbox, Masterworks Music and Midnight Riot were mentioned, as well as Sakura Music which is founded by Mark Lower. When we approached the subject of events or gigs that inspired them, they confessed to being enlightened whilst attending a Glitterbox event at Ministry of Sound, London, in 2017. It had that much of an effect on them that it was the catalyst that them launch their own events, in their hometown of Lille.

Tracks

The guys’ first track was released three years ago; an edit of ‘Serge Gainsbourg – Sea, Sex & Sun’ (see the insert). When we asked them, which tracks they were most proud of, the guys had their own favourites – Barry, favours the edit of ‘Love Thang’ which is the newest edit they’ve done and, it’s on their SoundCloud page for a free download now. He also favours an edit of ‘Michel Berger - La Groupie Du Pianiste’ which is a French variety classic. Gibbs on the other hand loves their new Sister Sledge edit and confesses he gets goose bumps every time they play it. It’s not just Gibbs who get goose bumps – check out the reaction of the crowd here in Poland when the track is dropped! When the guys were asked about any new tracks, they advised us that they have a release on Masterworks planned later this year, and probably some new edits to come as free download on Soundcloud.

 Gigs

If you wish to check out the guys live then they have a biannual residency at “Le bistro de Saint So” in their hometown, Lille. It’s a large venue where they launched their Disconnect event last year. In the future they want to take the Disconnect Event in Lille to the next level, driven to improve the already fantastic night, they already have - so watch this space! They also recently gigged at the launch of the cool venue  La Capucine Lille .

To coincide with their own disconnect night, the guys also have the disconnect radio show which is released every month. If you want to check out the show it is hosted on their SoundCloud page.

We’d like to thank both Mark and Quentin, along with Karen Ridley and the Downtown disco agency. Check out their guest mix in the link below.

Magnetic Soul DJ Bio - Sneaky Disco EP106

Magnetic Soul

We were lucky enough to have Magnetic Soul record a guest mix for our Sneaky Disco show at the beginning of March.  He curated a cracking set, dropping some real toe tappers, with Eros, Volume 1, Track 3 a true highlight – we’re sure you’ll agree. For those of you wanting to know a little more about the DJ, here’s Magnetic Soul’s Good2Groove bio.

Where it all began

A-569381-1348328911-5515.jpeg.jpg

Originally from Belfast, Magnetic Soul (MS) has probably seen more of the UK than the average native. Having had stints in Manchester, Birmingham and now holed up in London; it’s not his geographical travels we’re interested in, rather his musical journey.

Drawn to Manchester after school by its vibrant music scene and attitude, MS was greatly influenced by the wealth of music and DJ heritage from great local radio stations and internationally renowned club scene across  the city; alerting his radar to more music than ever  before. Fully immersed in the club scene, it wasn’t long before he took his first punt at promotion at the recently opened Sankeys Soap club with the Dis©nnect club night, learning the first vital lesson to use someone elses money if possible!

Deep into the scene and fully gripped by the vinyl bug MS moved to  Birmingham to attend Uni, where he remained for over a decade. Here he  honed his eclectic style hogging the decks at regular house partys as  well as stints DJing Wobble, MOS Bar and even Jungle on a pirate radio  station. He eventually got a job in several vinyl specialist dance music  warehouses just long enough to rinse all the best tunes and meet kindred  spirits that would seed the idea for the Floatation club night. Music  was definitely in his blood.

It was at Floatation where MS experienced some of his most memorable  moments. It was a pretty legendary underground party held in a small  back room club/ bar in Birmingham. The club had Balearic DJs in the bar  area and played pure soulful, disco infused deep house in a small back  room conservatory. With a ridiculous sound system, over used smoke  machine and even a fish pond, the club wreaks of the hysteria the raves  of the era evoke! He even recalls someone, after a particularly good  night, trying to give CPR to a fish on the dancefloor at 6am!

Making music

696933_large.jpg

MS had been making tunes since 98 but it wasn’t until about 10 years later that he got his first tracks released on labels Midnight Riot and Rotating Souls. With a backlog of unfinished tracks and a number of budding projects just waiting to be unleashed he decided to start his  own label and Dab Hand label was born.  The label’s seen three vinyl  releases (What You Gonna Do, Summer Love, Come into My Life) and 12  digital releases, so far.

The release MS is most proud of is ‘Lovin’ on Run’, which was his first  vinyl release on Rotating Souls out of the US. MS has always had a  massive love for US house labels out of NYC, Chicago and West Coast and original funk disco artists, so getting picked up by a label out there  was such a bonus for him!

He states that “It was one of those tracks that just came out of nowhere and fell together easily with great soul elements and groove”. MS is  working on some new tracks and hopes to have some releases in the next few months.

MS refuses to be tied down to any style and plays everything from Balearic, eclectic beats to sleazy soul and funk grooves, new disco  edits, all sorts of deep house and proto sounds. Check mixcloud for some historic mixes and styles through the years:

Inspired by…

MS is more of a fan of underground and alternative party venues; he feels that they draw a clued up, open minded, music focused crowd. His favourite events have always been festivals or the D.I.Y. sound system parties around the Midlands, which attract a mixed crowd, relaxed vibe and lenient close times.

Although a UK nomad, MS has played at some amazing venues and locations across the globe. These include; Garden festival in Croatia and Bloom and Love In, both in Bristol. His best memories, however, will always be the Floatation nights; the mix of great music, magical atmosphere, surrounded by good friends DJing and partying together was infectious. One thing he loved most was being able to DJ two different sets in one day, from deep house to eclectic disco sets on street parties with an up-for-it and mixed crowd that sometimes would last all day until first light.

MS has a number of people that inspire him; the usual legends like Francois K, Larry Levan, Kerri Chandler, Johnny D Nicky P, Metro Area and Idjut boys, as well as more recently MCDE, Session Victim and Art of  Tones. The  labels which influenced himmost in the early days were US disco house labels, like Henry St (Johnick), 83 west (Mateo Matos) and  Nuphonic Balihu.  More recently his influences range from old disco and italio labels, to new re-edit vibes like Whiskey Disco, Kolour, RazorNTape and more eclectic stuff like Early Sounds, Phantom Island and International Feel.

His love of labels has helped with his immense vinyl collection, which is close to 10,000 records - spread over a few rooms in his house and some stored in his parents’ garage. He still buys a lot of old and obscure classics on Discogs and loves nothing more than rummaging through the racks of second hand record stores or boot sales, for those unexpected finds.

Where to find him

Last year, MS played four hefty 5hr sets at Spiritland Audiophile bar in Kings Cross. Here he gets the opportunity to play and experiment with all the weird and wonderful gems his extensive collection has to offer. He anticipates he will return to Spiritland for more chilled and eclectic sets, but is always up for more disco and house club sets. He loves taking time to prepare interesting warm up sets - a real DJ in our
eyes.

Living in London, working as a freelance photographer /videographer, MS regularly shoots music videos and promo photos for all kinds of up and coming artists. He really enjoys working with new artists and helping them to promote releases - check out the following website.

https://musicvideo.london

We’d like to thank Magnetic Soul for his time and contribution to our show and look forward to some more mighty Vinyl releases. We’re equally looking forward to his new material joining all three of his previously released tracks, which are already staples in our own collections!

Top 10 Djs of 2017 NuDisco, Disco

1. Hotmood

Quite simply, everything HOTMOOD has touched this year has turned to gold. We have featured so many of his tracks, and I (Scott) have been on a one man quest to collate all his vinyl releases. His own style of mid tempo chilled groove, which can be taken up at any time, leaves HOTMOOD in a league of his own.  A couple of remixes of his tracks, especially by Ziggy funk, have taken a new twist to the records whilst still having that original stamp of quality.

2. Dr Packer

Dr Packer has done it all this year; from Ibiza and a tour of England, to nuemorus huge gigs back in his now homeland Australia, he has cemnted himself as a favourite of the disco and edits scene. His relationship with defected has seen him release some old house grooves, but with a picthed down style such as 'I'll be good'. His release on Masterworks 'the DJ's Delight Vol 3', highlights his amazing prodcution quality and ear for a great tune.

3. Javi Frias

Madrids Disco master has had a great year releasing numeorus top draw releases. His mix for Sneaky Disco was one of our favourite tracks, if not favourite, of the year; you also need to check out his other mixes, especially Chineurs de Madrid mix.

4. Michael the Lion

After a number of great releases in 2017, it was almost the year of The Lion. A whole host of mixes, remixes and DJ mix sets, left us wanting more from Michael and tracks such as Get it on, The Changer and the remix of Sea of Love rocked the floor every time we dropped them. He was in the Traxsource top 100, but for us he deserves more recognition than that!

5. Joey Negro

What can you say about Dave Lee that hasn't already been said? Numerous alter egos, all of which drop top draw disco and house music. The produced and remixed 'with love' sets live up to expectations;  Quality music produced by a master. Hopefully he'll continue to churn out tracks to the same standard of those he's produced over the past two years, as he has brought some quality disco tracks back from the archives.

6. Purple Disco Machine

Another artist who has really taken off this year - even featuring on Mixmags LAB and the Esesential mix. We noticed him years ago with an edit of CRAM's track - 'A Good Night'. This year he redid 'Lola's Theme', which was a huge hit, as well as 'London Heartache' and 'Love for Days', amongst many more. The German disco master will be coming big in 2018 and maybe closer to no.1 next year!

7. Eli Escobar

Put your hands up... Put your hands up... !! A track that always makes the whole bar move. Eli Escobar has been very busy with releases on his own edit label and also Razor N Tape, alongside his album 'Happy Again'. If you haven't checked him out on Boiler Room do it now, as it's one of the best house/disco sets you will ever see

8. Yam Who

Not just content with running the best label around, the guys form Midnight Riot also produce and remix some of the best tracks around. Great live too, as we saw at 53 Degrees North, Halifax. They should need no introduction - They also have a weekly radio show you should check out too.

9. COEO

What a year - The TOY TONIC label has been lucky to have so many good releases from COEO. 'Mydonna' is a class track which is always a crowd fave. Other hits this year have been 'In Motion', '1981' and their mix for Razor Tape is one of the best you will hear.

Link to there tracks: https://www.juno.co.uk/artists/Coeo/

10. Sunner Soul

There were so many tracks out in 2017 that hit the mark with us - Sunner Soul features so many times for us. We keep on asking for a mix, but it's not coming as the artist is so busy - probably producing all the hits from the past 12 months. Vintage music has seen a new lease of life in some great tracks from him,  from disco edits, to even nu-jazz and almost hip hop beat instrumentals.. A must for anyone that likes a varience in edit styles.

Disco, Nudisco, Edits Tracks of 2017

We've been lucky enough to feature some amazing tracks this past year and there are some, for whatever reason, that we have not been able to get into our shows. So we thought it would be a great idea to highlight our top ten favourite tracks of 2017. Not in any particular order, might we add, but we hope you like them or at least discover something new:

Danny Kane - Feelin Me (feat Jacqui George - Yam Who remix)

Click to play: DANNY KANE & TIMY VEGAS feelin me (12'') (Midnight Riot Rec) 2017

Even though it's a low BPM, this track has a groove to it which, for me, seems fresh and has not been replicated by anyone else in the past 12 months (not from what we've heard, anyway). It has great vocals, a great build and that Midnight Riot syle polish, all making it stand out as one of the tracks of the year.

BOSQ: Can't Seem To Hide feat. Megan Doherty

This is our joint favourite vinyl release of 2017. Thankfully for you lucky people, it's also available now on bandcamp: Link here: https://bosq.bandcamp.com/album/cant-seem-to-hide-b-w-take-me-there

This has the feel of a classic summer track which is easy on the ears and spices up any set.

Click to PLay

Luke Solomon feat. Queen Rose & Amy Douglas 'Light You Up'

Probably our favourite up-tempo track of the year. With a funky groove that has your foot tapping from the moment needle touches vinyl, it makes you want to move no matter where it's played. It's been a hit every time we've played it and we're sure that will go on long into this year, too.

Omar-S Featuring Nite Jewel ‎– Confess To U

This vinyl release has all the traits of a track that'd have been on the old Soul Heaven label just a few years ago. It's a slight move away from Omar S' tracks of late, but oh so worth it - especially for the amazing vocals, which make this track one of our favourtite chilled tracks of the year.

Midnight Magic - Sea of Love ( Michael The Lion Remix )

Great track, capping off a fantastic year for The Lion! The melodic piano and vocals drive the track all the way from start to finish. It's a bit of a builder too, which makes it even better, especially for those who really like to get their crowd going!

Atlantic Starr - Circles (Joey Negro Extended Disco Mix)

Joey Negro never disappoints and this remix is no exception; it gives a whole new feel to the original 1982 Atlantic Starr classic. This was released on the remixed 'With Love' EP and the B side was another remix of Chic's 'Everybody Dance'. Not one to shy away form the classics, the rest of the album is pretty special too.

Prospect park – Till You Surrender (Dj Fudge Disco Mix)

Dj Fudge has a way of turning already good tunes into great tracks, by giving them an upbeat and punchy twist. This song was that popular it even featured on a BT Sport advert! :-) Lovely strings throughout the track and a powerful vocal give this a modern disco vibe, making it a must play on the dancefloor.

Dr Packer Corner St Boogie

Dr Packer had a fantastic year and this was our favourite track produced by the DJ. It is produced by Masterworks and is on the Dj's Delight EP 3, which also has a couple of other quality tracks.

or here:

HotMood - Hundreds Of Times

From the amazing Grooves Vol.1 EP, Hotmood's 'Hundred of Times' has a mid-tempo groove which is a headbobbin' fave. Whether played at the start of the set, or even dropped partway through, it always works to get a set popping and it's a fantastically produced track (Like all his work).

Dr Packer - What I Got

Produced brilliantly, great vocals and one that you can't help but sing along to, well, at least for some of the track at least!

Venice Beach Parisian Disco

Revew:

Review: This may not be the first full-length outing for occasional Nang contributors Venice Beach - they've previously released a few albums of re-edits - but it is their first set of original productions. Beginning with the Gauloises sporting Italo-disco chug of "No Complex", Parisian Disco is a perfect showcase for the duo's distinctive brand of synth-heavy nu-disco. Highlights include the rubbery dub disco grooves and dancing melody lines of "Medusa Lounge", the similarly throbbing party business of "Paradise" - all slap bass and big build-ups - and the dreamy nu-disco/deep house fusion of "Unique". The album's two vocal moments are pretty tidy, too, making it a quietly impressive collection of tracks.
